Centre of Hope
A home for children to grow, learn, and build a brighter future.

Centre of Hope is a non-profit organization dedicated to uplifting the children of Mitchells Plain and its surrounding communities. Through a variety of social outreach programs, we strive to be a home that nurtures every aspect of a child's development. Our belief is simple but powerful: "You build a child; you build a nation." By focusing on the comprehensive well-being of each child, we aim to create a lasting impact that transforms not only individual lives but also the future of our community.
We provide food, shelter, and medical care to ensure that every child under our care grows in a safe, nurturing environment. Our holistic approach doesn’t just focus on physical needs but also on emotional, social, and cognitive development—ensuring that the children we support are well-prepared for all areas of life.
At present, 9 children live with us full-time, and we support an additional 30 children through our educational program, who, while not residing with us, are an essential part of our extended family.
The Centre of Hope began in 2017 with one project aimed at caring for orphaned, neglected, and HIV-positive children. In 2021, we officially registered as a non-profit organization, expanding our work to include educational and supportive programs for children from the broader community. Every step we take is guided by our commitment to the belief that investing in a child is investing in the future of our nation.
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." – Mahatma Gandhi
Centre of Hope was founded by Hazel, a woman deeply committed to the well-being of children in need. Hazel grew up in the Eastern Cape and moved to Cape Town in 1993, where she completed her matric. During her early career, she worked as a cleaner at Essential Cleaning Company, but her heart led her to volunteer during her free time at Emasithandane Children’s Organisation. In 2005, she left her cleaning role to become a full-time caregiver at Emasithandane, pursuing her passion for child care. Hazel is also professionally trained, holding a senior certificate in Early Childhood Development. Her journey as a foster mother began in 2008 when she fostered a 9-month-old baby girl, which planted the seed for what would become the Centre of Hope.
"As the legendary Muhammad Ali said, 'Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.'

At Centre of Hope, we believe that even small efforts can create meaningful change. Our commitment to helping children may not solve every challenge, but through our Holistic Child Growth Model, we strive to make a difference where it matters most. This holistic approach focuses on nurturing every aspect of a child’s development—physical, emotional, social, and cognitive. By addressing each child’s unique needs, we aim to not only support their academic growth but also equip them with the skills and resilience they need to thrive in all areas of life.

Since its official establishment in 2015, the Centre of Hope has grown steadily, nurturing more than 30 children who have lived at the home full-time during different periods. In 2021, the organisation was formally registered, marking a significant milestone in its journey. Currently, 9 children reside full-time in the home, receiving the care and support they need. As part of our growth, we also introduced a Saturday program for community children who do not live at the centre, giving them access to educational support and a nurturing environment.

At Centre of Hope, we strive to shape the future by providing vulnerable children with a foundation built on care, education, and empowerment. Through our home and community programs, we work to create lasting change, offering not just shelter, but a chance at a brighter future.
Together, we can show these children that they are seen, valued, and loved. After all, "You build a child; you build a nation."
We provide a safe, nurturing home for children who are orphans, neglected, or living with HIV. Our full-time childcare program focuses on ensuring their basic needs—such as food, shelter, and medical care—are met. More than that, we create an environment where they can thrive emotionally, socially, and intellectually. By caring for the whole child, we invest in their future and, by extension, the future of our nation.
"It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men." – Frederick Douglass
As part of our mission to uplift children from Mitchells Plain and surrounding communities, our Saturday Community Classes are a vital outreach initiative. These classes provide educational and personal development opportunities for children who may not reside at Centre of Hope but are still part of our extended family. We believe that by empowering children with knowledge and skills, we are helping to shape the future of our community in a meaningful way.
